Beach days rock at Far Rockaway

Did you know NYC Parks Department cares for more than 14 miles of beaches?

Back in the UK we lived in rural Cambridgeshire, probably the furthest point in England from any beach or coastline. So we are thoroughly enjoying taking advantage of the plethora of beaches on offer just a stones throw from the city.

As we are still without a car (hurry up and verify me DMV!) we discovered a gem of a beach at the end of the A subway line a couple of weekends ago; Far Rockaway.

We got off the A train at Beach 67 Street and joined the newly renovated Boardwalk. The original was devastated by hurricane sandy in 2012. So now the beach has a shiny new Boardwalk perfect for cyclists (or scooters if you prefer).  The facilities, such as the loos and changing rooms are all new and well kept, much better than Coney Island and less queues!

You could join the beach here if you wanted more peace and quiet, but we headed to the more lively area. There are lots of food choices if you venture further along, but hungry after the journey we tucked into burgers at Rippers. No traditional fish and chips for these Brits.

Along the edges of the Boardwalk there is also some lovely little playgrounds, we saw one nautical themed one, which B couldn’t wait to try.

I had to keep pinching myself as the day felt like a dream and couldn’t believe when it was over I’d be back home in my own bed. New Yorkers are so lucky to be able to visit for the day.

It's the way daddy used to build them apparently...

Beach hair, don't care!

No fish and chips at the beach, had to make do with an all American burger!
