Washington Square Park – Fun at the fountain!

Ever since I heard you could jump in the iconic fountain at Washington Square Park I’d been waiting for a day hot enough to justify a visit to dip my toes in the water.

Currently New York is in the midst of another heat wave and excessive heat advisories have been issued (which never happens in England by the way) so what better way to cool down on a sunny afternoon?

In the heart of Greenwich Village and barely 10 acres in size, you could say Washington Square Park is small but perfectly formed!

We visited early on a Friday afternoon and the atmosphere was relaxed and performers in the way of mini bands help it feel upbeat too. I’m not sure if they were organised by the Parks Department or if they arrived of their own accord, either way they were appreciated.

We started off in the mounds play area.  These are basically some little hills covered in artificial grass and with some rope climbing frames on top. I thought this area was a little disappointing as they were smaller than I was expecting. However never under estimate the imagination of a four year old, B jumped straight in and thoroughly enjoyed himself here for quite some time!

Next we called by the big kids playground. This is a lovely play space with slides, sandboxes and water squirting turtles – all the loveliness you would expect from a NYC playground. Needless to say we had a good play in here.

We finished off with a dip in that iconic fountain. B thoroughly enjoyed splashing around and I even dipped my feet in for a splodge. Grown-ups and children alike relished in the relief from the city heat, some getting wetter than others. It all felt quite magical in front of that famous arch.

We then took a stroll to Big Gay Ice Cream as I’ve heard soooo much about it. I went for a Mermaid Sundae – divine! And little B, despite all that was on offer, went for his usual, a plain vanilla cone, no toppings.

At his insistence, we then walked all the way back so he could have another splash in the fountain. After he walked all that way in the first place for a vanilla cone, how could I refuse?

Ready to dive in.

Suns out tums out!

He even tried to swim at one point.

Some Spiderman moves at the mounds area.

Another area of the park where they were feeding birds.

The playground.

You can see why we stayed here a while.

When you see a slide, you have to right?
