All packed and ready to go!

So you know the end of pregnancy is near when you finally get around to packing your hospital bag!

Even though I appeared to pack my bag just fine five years ago when I had my first I couldn’t help but scour the web again looking for lists of essential items. The recommendations didn’t appear to have changed and really you and the baby don’t need too much in those first few hours but it's always best to be prepared. Below I’ve shared our lists below and included those items you will wish you had remembered to bring.

For Baby

As I’m no longer in the UK, I can’t just pop along to Mothercare to stock up on all my essentials. I’ve had to shop about a little bit and have found a lovely brand called Little Me which is where I have got our baby girl her first baby grows and coming home outfit. For little white vests to go underneath her clothes I’ve gone for a basic multi-pack from Carters.

I also stumbled into a store with the most awful name BuyBuyBaby; but actually it was nice inside with the most helpful staff. Here I found the most gorgeous muslin swaddles which are absolutely huge and I’m sure will come in handy for any number of reasons when baby arrives. I also stocked up on good old pampers diapers / nappies and baby wipes.

As I said you don’t need much for baby. I’ve packed….

  • Babygrows - at least two or three
  • Vests - at least two or three
  • Hats
  • Coming home outfit - awww
  • Diapers/nappies and sensitive baby wipes
  • Blankets / muslins

For Mama

Packing for myself was a slightly less enlightening process. I headed to H & M  for some cheap and cheerful PJs and then headed to Target  for things such as nipple pads, nipple cream and heavy duty sanitary towels - having babies is such a beautiful time right?!

Target was also a great place to stock up on travel sized shower gel, shampoo and other toiletries you can’t do without.

I also ordered a cheap phone charger from Amazon and popped it in the bag as I’d hate to be without phone power when I’m in the hospital.

By far the biggest item in my bag is the ‘big brother’ gift for my five year old when he comes to visit. We ordered him a special ‘big brother’ t-shirt and also a kids digital camera with a few special effects and games. Hopefully he will like the responsibility of the fun job of taking photos!

The slightly longer, less glamorous list for me consists of…..

  • Any paperwork/ insurance info
  • Phone charger
  • Toiletries - toothbrush, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc
  • Hair ties - if you have long hair like me, the last thing I want is it hanging down, it will be a mum-bun all the way!
  • Make-up - I’ve packed a tiny bit, but I have no idea if it will be used!
  • Dressing gown - on the list, but I haven’t packed one as its summer
  • Cheap flip flops - everyone recommends these for hospital floors/ showers
  • PJ’s - I’ve gone for dark colours and ones that open at the front
  • Coming home outfit - You’ll be about the size you were at 6 months pregnant
  • Underwear - think granny pants and nursing bras - sexy!
  • Pads - for any part of you that may leak!
  • Nipple cream
  • Socks - Apparently your feet get cold during labour
  • Towel - I can’t face using a hospital one
  • Snacks - I can not recommend packing snacks high enough!
  • Ipad / books for entertainment - probably dreaming if I think I’m going to be sat relaxing but why not bring them anyway?
  • Pen and paper - I expect to be very tired and probably forget anything I am told, so will need to write it down
  • Spare carrier bags
  • Gift for older kid

So we are all packed and ready for d-day which is great, but confession time; when my son arrived we left the bag in the car and went into the hospital empty handed :)
